John Lennon:” We are more popular than Jesus Christ”.

Titanic owner:” Not even God can sink this ship Titanic”.

Digong Duterte:” God is stupid. Luluhod sa akin ang diyos ninyo”.

Results: John Lennon was assassinated. Titanic was sunk in its maiden voyage. Digong???

“Anyone who blasphemes God shall bear the penalty; whoever utters the name of the Lord in a curse shall be put to death”.

Dan Amosin Is Japan also to be destroyed because of idolatry ( Buddhist and Shinto shrines and statues)? Or Singapore ( Buddhist shrines and statues)? Or France, Italy and Spain? Or India ( Hindu statues)? There is no idolatry in the Philippines. We don’t worship statues. The current idolatry is the worship of money and power to the exclusion of God’s commandments and oppression of fellowmen. It’s very simplistic to say we are poor or dystopic because we are being punished on account of idolatry. Otherwise, Singapore and Japan would be in the doldrums by now if that is the sole criterion.

Ben Brazal Yes Dan all idols and their worshippers will be destroyed is clear in the Scriptures .

Any thing or anyone could be an idol even money etc.

So at the end of time only Yahweh will remain.

Ben Brazal Addendum:
Why other nations are punished later than others is due to divine forbearance so they are given time to repent. It's entirely divine sovereignty at work choosing which one first given reprieve for their sins. So grace abounds as people sin more.

Dan Amosin Man’s thoughts are not God’s thoughts and to say the Philippines is in His crosshairs because He has a special hatred for the Philippines on account of idolatry and is thus punishing her first rather than “ idolatrous” Japan, which massacred millions of innocent civilians in World War ll, is quite stretching the parameters of divine justice towards uncharted shores. Nope. It’s very simplistic to attribute the poverty and dystopia of nations to idolatry. It’s like a magic formula. Why are many Islamic nations, which ban religious statues, poor and in constant turmoil, like Bangladesh , Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Sudan, Libya, Egypt, Nigeria, among others? They’re not “ idolatrous”. Nope. There are many reasons why nations rise or fall, but idolatry is not one of them.

Ben Brazal Dan you are right and those thoughts are fashioned into divine decrees /fiats to be executed as the right time comes for their execution though those decrees/fiats were formed in eternity past.

Dan Amosin What I know as a practicing Catholic is that I don’t worship idols any more than I worship the flag in a flag ceremony or kiss my (now deceased ) parents’ hands or pictures as a sign of respect. Any impression that I worship idols is frankly quite overrated and contestable. I don’t ascribe any divine powers on inanimate objects.

Ben Brazal Dan this matter of idolatry is most misunderstood by many people specially Catholics.
Though officially the stand of the Vatican is against idolatry yet it allows unhindered its members to do it.

Now Dan here is where the crux of the matter lies which very few.Catholics understand.

In the Scriptures in the 2nd command notice the wording how idolatry is defined .

1. Don't make any image
PLUS
2. Don't prostrate/kneel before it

OR
3.Serve it

So once you do either one or two or both one and two idolatry despite absence of intent it is already idolatry.

A little technical and tricky how the Scriptures defines idolatry and many Catholics miss it.

This technicality well understood by bible readers nonCatholics explains total absence of any image in their house of worship.

To sum up
Idolatry = 1.Image +Bowing before it
OR
Serving it

In a Catholic church in the Philippines the 10 commandments displayed in front of the building omitted the 2nd command(about graven images)
Why the Catholics leadership there allowed it was subject of a TV documentary I saw last week.

I should add it's a sin committed without intent.
Analogous in legal parlance to crime Mal in se, not malum prohibitum

Dan Amosin Then why are people offering flowers to the Rizal monument? Why are statues being created and put inside the Congress building in a Washington DC if making images is prohibited? Why did Moses create an image of the bronze snake upon orders from God, put it on a pole and told all Israelites to look at it if bitten by any snake, so that they would not be harmed? ( 2 Kings 18:4; Numbers 21:9) That’s idolatry following your aforestated definition. Then ther
