Law of Success II

American Ilocano
12/30/2008 8:27:00 PM

As in Law of Success I, the quotations, unless stated are from Napoleon Hill's book, Law of Success. It is however appropriate to start with a Bible quotation from Matthew 7:7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you."

TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR THOSE OVER FIFTY YEARS OLD

I. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

II. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

III. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

IV. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

V. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

VI.Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.

VII. No one is in charge of your happiness, except you.

VIII. Forgive everyone for everything.

IX. What other people think of you is none of your business.

X. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

"Don't Look at Others Your Own Age And Thinking"

Have you ever been guilty of this? Well....you'll love this one.

The story goes like this......

I lady was sitting in the waiting for her first appointment with a new dentist and she noticed his DDS Diploma, which bore his full name.

Suddenly, she remembered a tall, handsome , dark-haired boy, with the same name, been in his high school years some 30-odd years ago. Reminiscing, she's saying to herself, could he be the same guy that I had a secret crush on, way back then? Upon seeing him, however, she quickly discarded any such thought.

This balding, grey-haired man with the deeply lined face was way too old to have been her classmate. After he examined her teeth, she asked him if he had attended Fairview High School.

Yes, yes, I did. I'm a bulldog. He gleamed with pride.

"When did you graduate?" she asked.

He answered, "In 1975. Why do you asked?"

You were in my class! She exclaimed.

He looked at her closely. Then that ugly, bald, wrinkled, fat ass, grey-haired, decrepit son-of-a-bitch asked. "What did you teach?"

In the arena, a bullfighter is allowed to prick a bull several times with a sword. The courage of the bull is tested with his willingness to charge in spite of the sting of the blade. Just like the bull, to be a success, one must try and continue to charge forward.

It's not what you lost but what you gained in the process.
One is not a failure when one is willing to stand up after each fall.
If you are not meant to be an accountant, there are other areas to try.
I think I read of the story of a woman who launched her painting career at the age of 65.
J.K. Rowling went through failed marriage and a lot of trials before she hit it big with her Harry Potter.
Stephen King was at the lowest point in his life when he received a phone call from a publisher asking him how much he wanted for his book that they were considering for publication.
See, AI, it is not the end of the world if you are still willing to hope and move on.

A young man asked Socrates how he could wisdom. Socrates replied, "Come with me." He took the lad to a river, pushed the boy's head underwater, held it there until the boy was gasping for air, then relaxed and released his head. When the boy regained his composure, he asked him, "What did you desire most when you were underwater?"

"I wanted air," said the boy.

Socrates told him, "When you want wisdom as much as you wanted air when you were immersed in water, you will receive it."

There is no such thing as a free lunch though! The bottom line is - you have to be a doer rather than a constant dreamer. Words become cheap if not put into actions. Also, the ability to pick oneself up each time one stumbles and try again is what differentiates or distinguishes (very few) men from the boys. It is definitely an attribute not many people possessed, me included. And, like anything in life, it is much easier said than done.

COUPLE REUNITED BY A KIDNEY

Thanks to a reunion in an operating room, Jim and Bernadette Tobin found their way down the aisle - again.

The Hull, Mass., residents got hitched a second time in March, 17 years after divorcing and 10 years after Bernadette donated a kidney to Jim, who was then her ex-husband. "We've already been through 'for better or for worse, in sickness and in health,' says Bernadette, 63.

The Tobins, who were high school sweethearts, were married 27 years the first time and grew apart after raising two daughters. But that changed following Jim's transplant operation, which saved his life from polycystic kidney disease. Afterwards, they lived together for eight years. "The first two or three years were just roommates," says Jim, 64. But that platonic relationship eventually turned into something much more. Jim says Bernadette looked at him one night and said that although she had thought that she would never have the same feeling as she did when she was a young girl, that's exactly what had happened: She loved him again.

Those words "really moved my heart," says Jim, who's now looking forward to enjoying his five granddaughters as a happily remarried man.

Okay kabagis! Para kenni kabsat a Ben dayta.

THE MAN IN THE GLASS
---by Dale Wimbrow--

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to a mirror and look at yourself
And see what THAT man has to say.

For it isn't your father or mother or wife
Whose judgment upon you must pass;
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.

Some people may think you a straight-shootin' chum
And call you a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.

He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear up to the end.
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of life
And get pats on your back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you've cheated the man in the glass.

Baka kastoy ti nangyari kanni Ka Ben the other way.

Love wasn't in the air that day, says Judith. "I just wanted a baguette." But suddenly two "astonishingly beautiful children" flung themselves on her dogs, Sammy and Romeo.

"The kids said, in French, of course, 'Papa, can we take a walk with them?'" recalls Judith. "I was delighted, turned around, and there was Freddy."

"Freddy" is Frederic Texier, a 39-year-old Frenchman of noble roots. And on December 17, Freddy and Judith - who will only say that she is "approximatively nine years en plus" than Freddy(translation: there's an age difference) - braved a blizzard to tie knot in Darien, Connecticut.

Their reception was complete with champagne, white roses, and a traditional, three-tiered French wedding cake. "I knew that life as an expatriate can have significant challenges. And I worried about our age difference, which was irrelevant to Freddy," admits Judy, who became an insta-mom to two spirited kids. "But life is short, love is rare, and the only certainty is change."

For the most, success meant the acquisition of money and material possessions, and being of recognized status. However, the more they acquired, the more they wanted, and the less satisfied they became with what they had. When they got it, it was never enough.

Mr. Alonzo. I don't believe one can be happy with money alone. Therefore, I don't believe most mean money as a sign of success. There are some greedy ones, I know. Of course if you have a family you want the best for them.

I said for the most, I did not mean all. I was just saying most of us are greedy, which I accept it is wrong. Man is chained of selfcenteredness. It is a world we have to deal of. How could the few resist? Success goes hand in hand with happiness and it should be lasting.

There is no way of knowing for sure unless we take a survey and make sure it is an honest survey. I also said most and not all. All I said was most want happiness first and not money. You say most want money first and not happiness. I am only going by people I know and knew.

The only person who I know put money first, I was married to. That is the biggest reason why I left her. She does want me back, willing to compromise, but I compromised many times before. Marriage should not be a bidding of assets. By the way, I left her everything.

Most thought success resulted from superior ability and failure from lack of it. But this consigned the big majority to failure from birth without a chance. If a man lacked the ability, he was foredoomed to failure. But failures are not fordoomed. Success does not just happen, and there are real sucess that endures.

Here’s a success story.

A few months after we settled in the United States, my family bought a house in Carson. I was befriended by Dewayne Buice in the 5th grade in Carson Elementary School. I always admired how Dewayne always enjoyed a good joke and laughs. During the next few years, I had the same classes with Dewayne and often walked to and from school together. Dewayne did not like learning or school and I often helped him with his math. I remember how angry he was at me for checking out of his basic math class so I can take an advanced math course. I still saw him around school, but we didn’t do much together after that.

Dewayne hated school and played baseball for the school to get out of classes. I remember him pitching for the community college I went to. He went on to the minor leagues and I went to the US Air Force. When I got back after four years, he was still in the minor leagues. After ten years in the minor leagues, he was called to the major leagues by the California Angels. He soon became their clubhouse clown. I remember another player describing him that he can get the whole clubhouse rolling on the floor. He also did a great immitation of Maxwell Smart.

He did good in his first year as an Angel. He was fifth in the voting for the Rookie of the Year honors. But he did not work out that winter and he did not do good his second year. I remember seeing him pitch for the Toronto Blue Jays on TV, but he did not last too much longer in the majors.

That winter when he didn’t work out, he went to a Chinese restaurant and met someone who was starting a baseball card company. He was having trouble getting major league connections. For a stake in the company, Dewayne did twenty minutes of phone calls for him. Although Dewayne did not do well in his second major league season, he was making more money with the baseball card company than he was making as a major league pitcher. I don’t exactly know what happened, but the baseball card company wanted out of Dewayne’s contract. After several lawsuits, they paid him $25million.

I last saw Dewayne on our 25th high school reunion. I didn’t think he’d make it, but he got in front of me, and I was surprised. We all got together in his rented limousine and blew the city of Long Beach that night. He did his Maxwell Smart immitation for us. I have his phone number, but I have not called him for about two years now. I don’t know how he is doing in this recession. I know he was watching his money close. He did not want to invest into anything speculative. He did not want his two sons having anything except their basic needs. He divorced his wife and was given $5 million.

You can google him. His name is Dewayne Buice. His baseball card company was Upper Deck.

I know that is a money success story, but oh well.

Three trivias about Dewayne:

1. Bob Boone holds the major league record for the most games catched by a catcher. Dewayne was pitching when he broke the record.

2. According to Dewayne, he faced Reggie Jackson five times and he struck him out each time. Dewayne now goes to many baseball players alumni get togethers. He sees Reggie Jackson in many of them. He reminds him of that each time he sees him.

3 When Dewayne faced Jimmy Wynn, a 270 lb giant, he used to throw a lot of fast balls inside and around his ear to intimidate him into not getting on base. On the first alumni that he saw Jimmy Wynn, Dewayne was scared. Jimmy Wynn looks at him and said, "Are we friends yet?" A relief came to Dewayne, "Thank God!!!"
